Winnipeg has launched its first snowplow naming contest, inviting residents to submit creative names for 12 heavy machines and a team of pathway plows.
Mayor Scott Gillingham noted other cities have ended up with names like Buzz Iceclear and Snowbi-Gone Kenobi.
“We know Winnipeg is full of creative kids and we can’t wait to put some of that creativity to work for our hard-working snow machines,” Gillingham said.
The city is accepting individual submissions for six graders and six loaders, which help clear streets each winter. Classrooms are invited to propose a team name for the pathway plows that keep sidewalks and bike paths safe.
Entries are open online through December 5, 2025. The city will release its top 30 picks in each category on December 8, followed by public voting from December 8–31. Winners will be notified on January 7, 2026.
Twelve individual winners will be invited to a special announcement in mid-January and receive custom name plates. The winning classroom will get a pizza party at City Hall with the mayor.

Some other Canadian cities that have named their snowplows include Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Kingston, Ont.
