WINNIPEG — A 26-year-old man is recovering after being attacked with a hatchet in an unprovoked assault on Ellice Avenue.
Police say the victim was walking east on Ellice just before 12:30 p.m. on Monday when he passed a man heading in the opposite direction. Moments later, he heard footsteps behind him and turned to see the same man holding a hatchet. The suspect struck him in the head before the victim ran to a nearby business for help.
He was taken to Health Sciences Centre in stable condition and treated for serious upper-body injuries.
Police identified a suspect and arrested him on Tuesday outside an apartment building in the 400 block of Beverley Street.
Joshua Clifford Walter Bear, 20, has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody.
