RCMP say two snowmobilers reported missing from St. Theresa Point First Nation have been found dead following a collision on the ice.

Island Lake RCMP received a report on December 17 that a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman had failed to return home after leaving the community on a single snowmobile early on December 15. Their intended route and destination were unknown.

Local search efforts were launched, focusing on the community and nearby winter and ice roads. On Thursday afternoon, the pair were located deceased outside the community.

Investigators determined the snowmobile was travelling on the ice when it struck rocks near a nearby island. The impact caused significant damage to the snowmobile and ejected both riders.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and will be confirmed following autopsies. Island Lake RCMP and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner continue to investigate.
