Operation Red Nose Winnipeg is calling for volunteers ahead of New Year’s Eve, saying it is short about two-thirds of the teams needed to meet expected demand on its busiest night of the year.
The organization currently has about 10 volunteer drive teams signed up for Wednesday, December 31, but says it needs at least 20 more teams — roughly 60 additional people — to safely handle call volume.
“We’re hoping that if you haven’t made any plans for celebrating, that you’ll help us out so that this year doesn’t end in tragedy,” said Elisha Dacey, volunteer media liaison for Operation Red Nose Winnipeg
Volunteers work in teams of three and do not all need to be drivers. One person serves as an escort driver, while the other two ride with the client and drive the client’s vehicle home. Teams are reimbursed for fuel, and dinner is provided before shifts begin.
Individuals or groups are welcome, and volunteers can be placed into teams if needed.
Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to email volunteer@rednosewinnipeg.ca or sign up online at rednosewinnipeg.ca/volunteer.
