The Canadian Red Cross has launched a crisis appeal to support community members on Pimicikamak Cree Nation affected by the recent power outage in northern Manitoba.
Funds raised will help the Red Cross deliver emergency relief, recovery, and resiliency efforts, including deploying emergency response units, personnel, and equipment, as well as providing mental health and psychosocial supports. While the appeal will support communities impacted by severe weather across Manitoba, the primary focus is Pimicikamak Cree Nation.
At the request of community leadership and under an agreement with Indigenous Services Canada, the Red Cross is already providing on-the-ground support. This includes emergency lodging, food, transportation, registration and information services, and referrals for personal services for those requiring evacuation.
For residents sheltering in place, the Red Cross has shipped more than 500 generators and 600 heaters to the community to help residents stay safe during the winter outage.
Canadians wishing to donate to the appeal can do so online or toll-free by phone through the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111.
