A 42-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a taxi driver was assaulted and robbed in Winnipeg’s Roslyn neighbourhood Thursday afternoon.
Winnipeg police say officers responded to a report of a taxi robbery at around 5:22 p.m. in the 1–99 block of Nassau Street. The driver reported being assaulted and threatened with a weapon by a passenger, who stole personal property, destroyed the in-car camera and continued making threats before driving off in the taxi. The driver wasn’t injured.
Police later located the taxi near River Avenue and Norquay Street, where the suspect was found still inside the vehicle. Officers say he was uncooperative during the arrest, showed signs of impairment, was in possession of alcohol and refused to provide a breath sample. He also allegedly gave a false name and was carrying another person’s identification.
Chief Silas Keeper, 42, has been charged with multiple offences and remains in custody.
