Winnipeg police have charged a man following a fatal house fire last weekend that claimed the lives of two women.
Emergency crews were called to the 300 block of Agnes Street the morning of February 7, where paramedics assessed seven people at the scene. Three victims were transported to hospital in critical condition, and two patients in stable condition. Two others didn’t require hospitalization.
Two of the victims later succumbed to their injuries sustained in the fire. They have been identified as Tyanaa Nattaway, 18, and Crystal Mary Ellen Beardy, 48. Both women were members of Garden Hill First Nation, who had been residing in Winnipeg.
Investigators learned that the fire had been deliberately set following a dispute between family members.
Douglas Wayne Jr. Nattaway, 30, was arrested on Tuesday. He has been charged with two counts each of second-degree murder and arson disregard human life.
Police say Nattaway — who remains in custody — was previously known to both victims.
