A 33-year-old man is in custody following a machete attack outside Siloam Mission early Monday morning.

Winnipeg police said officers were called to the shelter in the 300 block of Stanley Street, just after 12:30 a.m. for a report of an assault with a weapon.

Police found a 36-year-old man outside suffering from a serious upper-body injury. Officers provided emergency medical care, including applying multiple tourniquets, before the victim was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Investigators say the victim and suspect were involved in a verbal dispute outside the shelter that escalated when the suspect allegedly pulled a machete from his backpack and struck the victim before fleeing.

The suspect was arrested a short time later in the 300 block of Princess Street.

The accused faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon, and remains in custody.
