The remains of an 81-year-old man have been recovered following a fatal Winnipeg house fire last weekend.

Winnipeg firefighters were called to a blaze at a residence in the 600 block of Nassau Street South on Saturday night.

Emergency crews had learned the lone resident of the home was unaccounted for. Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters and police deemed it unsafe to enter the house.

Once the structure was safe to enter, a systematic room-by-room demolition of the house was initiated, and the victim was located. Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service technical rescue task force repelled from the bucket of the aerial ladder into the house and retrieved the 81-year-old victim.

Police say the fire isn’t being treated as suspicious.
