Winnipeg Blue Bombers kicker Sergio Castillo has been named the recipient of the team’s two annual community service honours — the Ed Kotowich “Good Guy Award” and the Cal Murphy “Heart of a Legend Award.”
The team says it marks the first time in franchise history that a single player has received both awards in the same year.
“I wasn’t expecting any of this, so it’s definitely an honour,” said Castillo. “All I can say is, ‘Wow’ and I’m very appreciative.
The Kotowich award, first presented in 1987, recognizes a player who demonstrates strong football ability, leadership in the locker room and outstanding community involvement. The Murphy Heart of a Legend award, introduced in 2001, honours a player who shows exceptional sportsmanship and dedication to the CFL and the community.
The 35-year-old kicker has been active in the community through partnerships with the Dream Factory and KIDTHINK, hospital visits, youth football clinics, kicking camps and the team’s Northern Trips during the offseason.
Castillo has appeared in 61 games over three stints with the Blue Bombers and signed a two-year contract extension in January.
