(RCMP / HANDOUT)
Three migrants who crossed into Manitoba from the United States were detained Tuesday following reports from members of the public in the province’s southern border region.
RCMP say officers with the Integrated Border Enforcement Team responded at around 8 a.m., after receiving a report of two people walking along Provincial Trunk Highway 201 near Neuenberg.
The two individuals were later found at a hospital, where they were treated for minor cold-related injuries. Police confirmed they had crossed into Canada from the U.S. and arrested them without incident before transferring them to the Canada Border Services Agency.
Later that morning, officers were alerted to another possible migrant at a business in Rosengart seeking a ride to Winnipeg. With assistance from an RCMP Black Hawk helicopter already patrolling the area, officers located the person hiding inside an unlocked parked vehicle and arrested them without incident. The individual was also turned over to CBSA.
Around noon, police responded to a report of a suspicious person outside a school in the Rhineland area. The school was placed under a temporary hold-and-secure while officers investigated. The individual was arrested for human smuggling but later released without charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
