A 48-year-old woman from Thompson has died following a head-on collision on Highway 280.

RCMP say the crash happened just after 10 a.m. on March 20 about 80 kilometres north of Thompson, involving two trucks — one towing a trailer carrying a small excavator.

Investigators allege the southbound vehicle attempted to pass a semi-truck when it was unsafe to do so, colliding head-on with a northbound truck.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a 23-year-old man from Gimli, was taken to hospital with injuries.

Police say no charges are expected, and weather conditions — including recent snowfall and reduced visibility — are believed to have been a factor in the crash.
