A Winnipeg man is facing multiple charges following a firearms smuggling investigation led by Winnipeg police and the Canada Border Services Agency.

Police say the investigation began on February 25, when a taxi driver discovered a black case left behind by a passenger after a trip from the city’s north end to the 2500 block of Pembina Highway. Inside the case was a loaded Glock handgun equipped with an auto sear, along with an extended magazine and 9mm ammunition.

The firearm was turned over to police, and officers launched an investigation, identifying Markus Jerome James North, 22, as a suspect.

On March 20, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 2500 block of Pembina Highway and arrested North without incident.

Police say the search uncovered approximately 23 grams of cocaine, 124 grams of crack cocaine, and multiple cell phones.

North has been charged with several firearms offences, drug trafficking charges, and failing to comply with release conditions. He was also arrested on two outstanding warrants for failing to attend court and remains in custody.
