A 32-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a stolen taxi incident on Saturday morning in Dauphin.

RCMP say they were called just after 5 a.m. when a passenger refused to pay a cab fare and instead stole the vehicle. The suspect had been driven to a local hotel before jumping into the driver’s seat and taking off when asked to leave.

Officers located the taxi about 25 minutes later, but the driver fled when police attempted a stop. The vehicle was then spotted in the RCMP detachment parking lot around 5:40 a.m., where it briefly stopped before speeding away again.

Police say the suspect returned shortly afterward, and officers were able to box in the taxi and arrest him without further incident.

During the encounter, the stolen cab struck a wheelchair ramp at the detachment, causing significant damage to both the vehicle and the ramp.

Dalton Roussin has been charged with theft of a vehicle, flight from a peace officer, and two counts of mischief over $5,000. He remains in custody.
