Winnipeg recorded some of its most significant crime reductions in years in 2025, according to the Winnipeg Police Service’s newly released annual statistical report.
Total crime severity dropped 8.8 percent, driven by an 11.2 percent decline in violent crime severity — one of the largest such reductions on record, say police.
Other statistics revealed by the WPS on Wednesday show homicides fell 48.8 percent, robberies dropped 6.6 percent, assaults declined 4.1 percent, firearm offences decreased 24.6 percent, and knife-related crimes were down 15.7 percent. Violent crime volume and severity declined for the second consecutive year.
Youth crime fell for the first time in four years, dropping 11.7 percent overall, with violent youth offences down 16 percent and weapon-related youth crime down 24.1 percent.
Property crime remained below pre-pandemic levels, sitting 5.8 percent lower than 2019 figures despite a slight year-over-year uptick of 0.9 percent. Shoplifting declined 4.6 percent after three straight years of increases.
Crime clearance rates improved for the third consecutive year, including a homicide clearance rate of 95.5 percent.
Despite the positive trends, calls for service hit a historic high, averaging more than 2,000 per day — with non-urgent responses surging 12.5 percent even as emergency calls dropped 10.3 percent.
