Winnipeg police are investigating a shooting and hostage situation that unfolded in the Polo Park area on Friday.

Officers were attempting to execute a search warrant near King Edward Street and St. Matthews Avenue at around noon when an armed standoff occurred.

A witness told ChrisD.ca they heard about a dozen shots fired before nearby schools were placed in a hold and secure.

“Members of the tactical support team arrived and two of the hostages were successfully rescued,” Const. Pat Saydak told reporters near where police had blocked off access to the scene.

“In the process of rescuing the third hostage, it was noticed that the house was on fire. The third hostage was then successfully rescued.”

Police called the incident a “use of force” encounter, but didn’t provide details about what the warrant was for or information on the suspect.
