No injuries were reported Monday night after a fire at the Walmart inside St. Vital Centre.

The store was evacuated shortly after 7 p.m. when a fire broke out, but it was quickly extinguished mostly by the store’s sprinkler system.

Winnipeg firefighters arrived on scene and completed the extinguishment, ensuring there was no further fire in the building on St. Mary’s Road.

“We are thankful that all Walmart staff and visitors were evacuated safely, everyone was accounted for, and no one was injured,” the mall said in a social media post on Tuesday.

“St. Vital Centre continues to work closely with Walmart, the Winnipeg Police Service, and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service to assist in any way we can.”

Video posted to social media showed flames touching the store’s ceiling as two employees looked on. Another post suggested the fire was deliberately set, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says the fire remains under investigation and no damage estimates are available.

As of Tuesday morning, Walmart St. Vital (including the pharmacy) remained closed until further notice.
