A 29-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a string of armed robberies in Winnipeg’s North End last month.
Winnipeg police say the incidents unfolded between 12:30 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. on June 22, when a man entered a grocery store in the 200 block of Salter Street and announced his intent to rob the business.
He allegedly assaulted one employee with a baton and attempted to assault another with an edged weapon. Employees and two security guards took refuge in a room, which the suspect then barricaded from the outside before fleeing. No serious injuries were reported.
Shortly after, police say the suspect allegedly approached two men working near Magnus Avenue and Salter Street and attempted to rob them. Both escaped without injury and contacted police.
He then allegedly approached a 19-year-old man near the same intersection, assaulted him and attempted to rob him. That victim also escaped without injury and called police.
Officers located the suspect on Salter Street near Magnus Avenue. He fled on foot when he saw officers but was arrested a short time later. Two weapons were seized during the arrest.
Julius Joseph McKay has been charged with multiple offences. He remains in custody.
