A 28-year-old man is dead after the Manitoba Sheriffs van he was driving collided with a train west of Portage la Prairie on Monday.

Manitoba RCMP responded to the crash at approximately 8 a.m. on Road 40 West in the RM of Portage la Prairie.

Police say a southbound Manitoba Sheriffs van collided with a train, causing the van to roll into a ditch. The driver, who was from Portage la Prairie, died at the scene.

A passenger in the van suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

RCMP are investigating with assistance from CN Police and Manitoba Workplace Health and Safety.
