A 72-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly demanding money in exchange for the return of a stolen cat in Winnipeg’s North End.

A 44-year-old woman reported her cat missing from her residence in the 200 block of Manitoba Avenue on July 14, telling police she suspected a neighbour was involved. Police say the neighbour later admitted to the victim he had the cat and delivered a letter demanding payment for its return, which was reported to police.

Officers attended the neighbouring residence on July 16 and located the cat inside, unharmed. The cat was returned to its owner.

The man is facing charges of extortion and theft under $5,000. He was released on an undertaking.
