A 25-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly attacking an RCMP officer and attempting to take firearms from two officers at Portage District General Hospital.

Portage la Prairie RCMP say an officer who was on shift guarding a prisoner was attacked by an unknown man in the emergency room area at around 1:45 a.m. on Monday.

The officer requested backup and fought to control the man with the assistance of hospital staff in the reception area, RCMP said. The suspect then attempted to take the firearm from the officer.

Additional officers arrived to help place the male under arrest, police said. While the suspect was being handcuffed, he once again attempted to take a firearm, this time from the holster of a different officer.
