Winnipeg Sea Bears guard Teddy Allen (CEBL.CA)
The Winnipeg Sea Bears say Teddy Allen was the victim of an assault by security staff at a downtown nightclub on Sunday.
In an update to a statement issued Tuesday, the team said it continues to co-operate with Winnipeg police and has referred officers to individuals and information based on accounts from those on the scene.
Video circulating on social media allegedly shows three security guards surrounding and physically escorting Allen from a local nightclub. The footage hasn’t been independently verified, and it’s unclear when it was taken.
“Teddy’s health injuries are significant and, while he has been released from hospital, he will require further diagnosis, follow up care and potentially surgery, which means he will not be available for our playoff game this coming Thursday,” the team said in a statement.
“No person should ever be subjected to the brutality of what happened to Teddy and we are counting on police to fully investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the assault.”
Allen, 28, leads the Canadian Elite Basketball League in scoring.
Winnipeg police haven’t commented on the matter.
