Winnipeg is giving one of its own a rhythm section worthy of a street sign to honour internationally acclaimed drummer Brent Fitz.
Bellavista Crescent between Voyageur Avenue and Rogan Drive was renamed as “Brent Fitz Way” during a ceremony on Friday.
The distinction recognizes the musician’s career and his lifelong ties to Winnipeg. Throughout his career, Fitz has performed and recorded with some of rock music’s most recognizable names, including Triumph, Toque, Streetheart, Slash, Alice Cooper, Vince Neil, Gene Simmons and Theory of a Deadman.
Fitz grew up on Bellavista Crescent before a career that took him to some of the world’s biggest stages.
“I’ve been fortunate to play music around the world, but Winnipeg will always be home,” said Fitz. “Growing up here shaped who I am, and to be recognized in the neighbourhood where it all started is incredibly meaningful.”
Despite his international acclaim, Fitz has stayed closely connected to his hometown, where his father, Mervyn Fitz, still lives.
