A 31-year-old man has been charged after allegedly setting a fire beneath a railway bridge near the Empress Avenue and Westway Avenue crossing over Omand’s Creek.

Winnipeg police say officers and firefighters responded at around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday to find flames and smoke coming from beneath the structure.

The suspect had left the area before police arrived, but officers located him a short time later in the 600 block of Erin Street.

Dylan Dorrie is charged with arson causing damage to property and fail to comply with a probation order, the latter stemming from an existing warrant.

Following consultation with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Police Service, he was also charged under the Railway Safety Act for unlawfully entering railway property without lawful excuse.

The bridge sustained damage in the fire but remains operational. A damage estimate hasn’t been released.

Dorrie remains in custody pending.
