STARS Air Ambulance is urging the public to exercise caution when using drones and lasers near aircraft, emphasizing the serious safety risks posed to pilots, crew, and patients.

The use of drones and lasers near critical areas such as helipads, emergency scenes, and airports can distract or disorient pilots, create cockpit glare, or block flight paths. Under the Aeronautics Act, individuals using drones or lasers close to aircraft may face legal action.

“We want people to enjoy using their drones and lasers, but to do so safely,” said Frank Eigenbrood, STARS director of safety and quality.

“Drones flown irresponsibly near our flight paths, can endanger our crew and our patients onboard, so we are looking to our community and our supporters to help raise awareness of these dangers and to prioritize safety over curiosity.”

STARS emphasizes that, unlike natural challenges like weather or terrain, the risks posed by drones and lasers are preventable.

The government mandates registration for drones weighing between 250g and 25kg, and STARS urges operators to follow safe flying guidelines, maintaining visibility, staying below 122 metres, and keeping a safe distance from heliports, airports, and emergency sites.
