WINNIPEG — Manitoba Public Insurance has filed a request to raise basic auto insurance rates by 2.07% for the 2026-27 insurance year starting April 1, 2026.
MPI filed the application with the the Public Utilities Board, saying rising claim costs, driven by increasingly complex and expensive vehicle technology, are behind the proposed hike.
If approved, the increase would add about $21 annually — or $1.75 per month — to the average private passenger vehicle policy.
To help manage costs, MPI also plans to adjust the basic deductible from $750 to $1,000, while introducing a new $750 deductible option under its extension products. Extension coverage rates — including add-ons like rental vehicle insurance — would see a separate two percent increase.
MPI is also applying to the PUB to expand the merit side of the driver safety rating scale to include level 20. If approved, Manitobans who move into this level will save 53 percent of the cost of their automobile and driver insurance in the 2026/27 insurance year.
