A group of elementary school students will plant thousands of trees today in a reclaimed aggregate pit near Oakbank.

Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from David Livingstone Community School in Winnipeg, along with developer Qualico, will be planting 10,000 white spruce trees in the RM of Springfield as part of the company’s Planting for the Future initiative.

The event comes as the province marks National Forest Week by giving away free seedlings until Friday. The public can pick up their seedlings from Manitoba Conservation, 200 Saulteaux Crescent, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, September 28.

Manitoba Conservation’s Lac du Bonnet office, located on Highway 52, will be giving away the seedlings daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
