July 4, 2014 2:34 PM | News

Inflated trap counts have forced the City of Winnipeg to begin fogging for mosquitoes this weekend.

Fogging of adult nuisance mosquitoes will begin Saturday night between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, weather dependent.

The city-wide trap count average was at 224 was of Friday, putting the adulticiding factor analysis at high.

Ken Nawolsky, the city’s superintendent of insect control, says crews will target the southwest quadrant of the city first, where there’s a concentration of the blood-suckers.

A bulletin will be put out to the public on Saturday, notifying residents of areas being targeted on any given day as the program continues.

Residents who wish to apply for a 90-metre buffer zone can do in-person at 1539 Waverley Street from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, or from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. A piece of ID with the address requesting the buffer zone is required. Buffers can also be requested by calling 311.

Fogging will be carried out daily from 9:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. until further notice, unless the temperature falls below 13°C and/or when wind speeds are not conducive to fogging.
