Canadian Red CrossMore than 2,000 people have been evacuated in northern Manitoba due to wildfires continuing to spread.

The evacuation orders were issued Thursday afternoon by the communities of Easterville and Chemawawin First Nation, 450 kilometres north of Winnipeg, due to smoke and threat from a fire that has moved to within half a kilometre of the community.

The province says fire crews are working on three fires in the area, with ground attack as well as two water bombers.

The Pas will see 70 people from the community of Easterville. Winnipeg hotels will be accommodating up to 2,000 people from Chemawawin First Nation.

The Canadian Red Cross is assisting with the evacuation. The organization is also providing support for transportation, hotels, food and other necessities, on behalf of the federal government.
