Manitoba RCMP have charged a man after a 21-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle and killed New Year’s Day in Berens River.

The victim, from Bloodvein, was walking westbound on Main Road at around 2:15 a.m. with a small group of people when she was hit.

The driver immediately stopped and drove to the Berens River RCMP detachment to report the accident.

The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

RCMP arrested David Ernest George, 36, with impaired driving causing death. The Berens River man was released to appear in court on March 12.

Police also say speed was a factor in the collision and continue to investigate.
