A 17-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking on a western Manitoba highway.

The collision occurred at 11:15 p.m. on July 31 near the Birdtail Sioux First Nation. RCMP say the teen was walking on Highway 83 about half a kilometre south of Provincial Road 355 when he was hit.

The 43-year-old woman driving the vehicle immediately stopped and called 911. The woman and a 23-year-old male passenger were both taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say a white pickup truck is believed to have stopped at the scene moments after, but took off before police could arrive. Officers are looking to speak with that driver and ask anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash to call Hamiota RCMP at (204) 764-2732, call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
