WINNIPEG — The name and face synonymous with the Christmas Cheer Board is retiring.

Kai Madsen, the longtime executive director of the charitable organization, is stepping down after a more than 50-year relationship with the Cheer Board.

“I can’t say enough about Winnipeggers,” Madsen said in a statement. “It’s been a wonderful journey, a large part of my life and I owe them a debt of gratitude. I’ve seen the best of everybody and when you think well of people, good things happen.”

Madsen says his experience over the years is one he will cherish.

“I’m thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a meaningful way.”

Shawna Bell, chairperson of the board, will assume the position of executive director and says planning for the 2021 season is already underway.

“As a life-long supporter of the work that the Cheer Board does, I feel it is so important that we are able to get back to doing what we do best,” says Bell.

“We are excited to see our volunteers return this year, and look forward to supporting families across the city with much-needed hampers over the holidays.”
