The Winnipeg School Division will be mandating masks for all students, staff and visitors when classes resume in September.

WSD says its board wrote a letter to Education Minister Cliff Cullen to reconsider a provincial mask mandate for Manitoba schools but hasn’t received a response.

“We believe that a provincial mandate, supported by a public health order, would be more effective and consistent, however, we also recognize that the vast majority of WSD parents and guardians want to have the reassurance now that their children will be provided this basic level of protection from the virus,” said Betty Edel, chair of the WSD board of trustees.

“Therefor [sic], when WSD staff and students return to school in September, masks will be required.”

Several other Winnipeg school divisions have announced mask mandates for the upcoming school year, including Pembina Trails School Division, Louis Riel School Division, River East Transcona School Division and Seven Oaks School Division.
