A 45-year-old Winnipeg man has been convicted of immigration-related offences after pleading guilty to fraud.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced Friday the conviction of Balkaran Singh, following an investigation that began in January 2021.
Singh had attempted to secure work permits for three foreign nationals at the Emerson port of entry, claiming they were offered jobs at a Gurdwara (a Sikh place of worship) near Winnipeg. However, CBSA officers raised concerns and denied the permits, prompting a deeper investigation.
A search warrant executed in December 2023 led to the seizure of digital devices and documents, revealing that Singh had created fraudulent employment offers and immigration documents for his clients.
Singh pleaded guilty to one count of counselling misrepresentation under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. His sentence includes two years of house arrest, a curfew, a ban on providing immigration advice, 200 hours of community service, and a $50,000 fine.
