Winnipeg police recently issued 65 tickets after an investigation into so-called stunt driving in the city.
Between May 15 and September 6, police received 37 calls reporting vehicles racing, tire squealing, and dangerous driving, mainly in large parking lots between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. The excessive noise and hazardous driving have frustrated citizens and raised alarm over public safety.
Local businesses have worked with police, installing security cameras and infrastructure to deter the activity. Several dangerous incidents were caught on camera, including vehicles taunting security, a car speeding at 120 km/h with someone on its hood, and a motorcycle driving at 189 km/h in a 30 km/h zone through a transit corridor.
Although no charges have been laid against individuals caught on video, a major enforcement operation took place on September 7 in the RM of Rosser, where 88 vehicles were gathered. Traffic violations were recorded, leading to five drivers receiving serious offence notices.
“We hope that this enforcement initiative will remind those who engage in reckless driving behaviour that they will be held accountable,” police said in a release.
