Winnipeg police say an 84-year-old man has died, and a 67-year-old man remains in critical condition following a tragic incident involving carbon monoxide poisoning.
First responders were called to the 600 block of Nassau Street South at around 2 p.m. on Friday, where a vehicle was found stuck in a snowbank. Emergency crews discovered both men and a dog unconscious, the result of exhaust fumes entering the cabin.
The dog was pronounced deceased at the scene. The men were transported to hospital, where the 84-year-old later succumbed to his injuries. The 67-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Police believe the incident resulted from carbon monoxide buildup caused by a snow-blocked exhaust pipe and do not consider the deaths suspicious.
Authorities are urging the public to take precautions to prevent similar tragedies. They say when running a vehicle in snow, ensure the exhaust pipe is clear and avoid idling in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.
