Winnipeg’s new police chief was officially sworn in on Monday during a ceremony at Princess Auto Stadium.
Gene Bowers is the 19th police chief of the Winnipeg Police Service, taking off from Danny Smyth, who retired from the role last fall.
“I am deeply honoured to serve as the next chief of the Winnipeg Police Service and lead the dedicated men and women of our police service,” Bowers said in a statement. “My focus will be on enhancing public safety, supporting our members, and strengthening community relationships.
“I am committed to working closely with Indigenous leaders and community members to promote healing, understanding, and a path toward true reconciliation. Meaningful and positive change can only be achieved when we work together in partnership with the communities we have sworn to serve and protect.”
Bowers, a 36-year veteran of the force, has held various positions with the WPS since he joined in 1989, including deputy chief since September. He arrives at the top job with experience spanning uniform operations, administrative roles, and criminal investigations.
Bowers’ appointment follows a comprehensive selection process by the Winnipeg Police Board to identify the best candidate to lead the service forward.
As chief, Bowers will oversee a force of more than 1,300 officers and 500 civilian staff.
