The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to three separate fires overnight between Monday evening and early Tuesday morning.
Around 9:08 p.m. Monday, crews were called to an industrial building in the 1500 block of Dugald Road where a smelting furnace had caught fire. The blaze was brought under control just over an hour later. All employees evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. Officials say the fire appears accidental, caused by a furnace malfunction.
About 30 minutes later, firefighters tackled a blaze at a vacant two-storey home in the 500 block of William Avenue. Smoke was seen coming from the structure, and crews extinguished the fire by 10:38 p.m. No one was inside, and the cause remains under investigation.
Then at 3:43 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to a bungalow on Brophy Avenue after a monitored alarm. The fire was under control within an hour, and while no people were injured, crews rescued several cats from the home. Investigators believe the fire was accidental and linked to smoking.
Damage estimates for all three fires are not yet available.
