A 25-year-old man is in custody after a Winnipeg police officer was assaulted while stopping a shoplifting incident downtown on Wednesday.
Police say an officer was flagged down around 4 p.m. near a business in the 300 block of Donald Street after a man fled with merchandise. The officer apprehended the suspect, who resisted and began assaulting him.
A knife fell from the man’s waistband during the struggle, and a passerby called police for additional help.
The officer sustained minor injuries before more police arrived and made the arrest. The man faces charges including theft under $5,000, assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, possessing a weapon, and breaching a release order.
