City to Suspend Some Wastewater Treatment Until March

The City of Winnipeg will temporarily shut off ultraviolet (UV) treatment at the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant starting October 1, as part of ongoing upgrades.

Wastewater will continue to be treated, but without UV disinfection, higher levels of bacteria and viruses will be released into the Red River. Officials caution this could pose health risks to people and pets, though fish are unaffected.

Residents living within three kilometres downstream will be contacted directly. The city advises avoiding direct river contact, washing hands after exposure, practicing safe fish handling, and keeping pets away from the water.

The UV system is expected to be back online in March 2026. Drinking water is not affected.
