All three levels of government are investing more than $25.9 million to support a new 72-unit affordable housing development in Winnipeg.
The project, located at 1510 Main Street, is led by Inuka Community Inc., a Black- and women-led non-profit developer. The complex will feature one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, with 30 units designated as affordable and about 40 percent of rents heavily discounted. Several units will also be leased to community members struggling to secure safe and clean housing.
The building will incorporate green design, accessibility features, and tenant supports such as settlement services and pathways to affordable homeownership.
Federal funding comes in part from a $50 million carve-out under the Affordable Housing Fund dedicated to Black-led organizations, aimed at creating more than 500 units nationwide.
Of the $25.9 million towards the project, more than $23 million is coming from Ottawa, while the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation will contribute just over $1 million, while the City of Winnipeg will contribute $1.5 million. Approximately $41,000 is coming from Inuka Community Inc.
