Two men have died and a woman was rescued after falling through thin ice in separate incidents in northern Manitoba over the weekend.
RCMP say at around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Mounties responded to reports that a woman had fallen through the ice on the Nelson River in Kinosao Sipi Cree Nation. First Nations Safety Officers, firefighters, and police located the 72-year-old lying on the ice with her feet in the water, unable to move for fear the ice would break.
Rescuers managed to reach her using a drysuit and a log thrown from shore, pulling her and a firefighter to safety. She was taken to hospital with signs of hypothermia and later told police she had been walking with a 44-year-old man who was still missing. His body was recovered from the water on Sunday evening.
In a separate incident early Sunday, Cross Lake RCMP were notified of footprints leading into open water in Pimicikamak Cree Nation. A drone search located the body of a 47-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the nursing station.
RCMP are urging extreme caution around waterways, noting mild weather has led to dangerously thin and unstable ice across much of the province. The investigations continue.
