Winnipeg police have charged a 52-year-old man following a suspicious apartment fire in the River-Osborne area on Sunday.

Officers were called to an apartment building in the 100 block of Clarke Street shortly after 3:30 p.m., after Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews reported the fire was being investigated as suspicious.

Police say the suspect set fire to furniture inside his apartment, causing the flames to spread quickly, resulting in significant damage and putting other tenants at risk.

James Douglas Lysak was located inside the building and arrested without incident. He has been charged with arson with disregard for human life and was detained in custody.
