A security guard has been arrested following the assault on a suspected shoplifter at a downtown convenience store last weekend, police say.
The incident stemmed from a 46-year-old man entering Dollarama in the 200 block of Portage Avenue on Saturday afternoon.
The suspect allegedly tried to leave without paying for $95 in merchandise and was confronted by a security guard. When the guard intervened and blocked his exit, the suspect threatened to kill and assaulted the guard, according to police.
Investigators say the guard then used brass knuckles to assault the man, tackled him and continued the assault while he was on the ground. Police say the guard also uttered threats during the altercation.
The incident was captured on video and reported to police the following day.
The 23-year-old security guard now faces charges of assault with a weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon, and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
The 46-year-old man was previously arrested and charged with robbery and uttering threats. He was also released pending a future court date.
