A three-month drug trafficking investigation has led to the seizure of about $1.5 million in illicit drugs and cash in Winnipeg.
Manitoba RCMP revealed the details of Project Deepwater at a news conference on Monday, which uncovered an inter-provincial drug trafficking network operating in Winnipeg and distributing large amounts of cocaine to communities across the province.
On February 5, officers executed search warrants at two homes in the Amber Gates neighbourhood with assistance from Winnipeg police, Selkirk RCMP, and the RCMP Roving Traffic Unit.
Investigators seized about nine kilograms of cocaine, four kilograms of illicit marijuana, 28 grams of crack cocaine and roughly 7,000 counterfeit pills disguised as over-the-counter pain medication. Lab testing later determined the pills contained a mixture of heroin and medetomidine, a veterinary sedative that creates a dangerous drug combination.
Police also seized $87,000 in cash along with trafficking equipment, including a money counter and a large processing press.
Anthony Tran, 35, of Winnipeg, has been charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Winnipeg on March 26.
RCMP say the investigation is ongoing.
