A 49-year-old man is facing an impaired driving charge after losing control of his vehicle and causing extensive property damage in downtown Winnipeg Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the area of Balmoral Street and Sargent Avenue just before 9:30 a.m., following reports of a collision involving a downed hydro line and damage to a bus shelter and City of Winnipeg traffic signal box.

Police say a 2005 Ford Mustang was travelling eastbound on Sargent Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver attempted to turn onto Balmoral Street and lost control. The vehicle struck a bus shelter and a Manitoba Hydro pole before continuing into a traffic signal box, coming to rest with its front wheels suspended off the ground. No injuries were reported.

After speaking with the driver, officers determined he was impaired and took him into custody. He was later released to appear in court.
