WINNIPEG – The weather provided some help Friday to crews battling a large forest fire that has forced 3,700 people from their homes in northern Manitoba.

The Manitoba government said strong south winds are pushing the smoke away from Wasagamack First Nation, and there is rain in the forecast for the first time in days.

A fire heavily damaged a vacant hotel in The Pas on Sunday morning, resulting in an 18-year-old facing two counts of arson charges.

The New Hawaiian Restaurant was fully engulfed when emergency crews arrived on Fischer Avenue at around 9 a.m.

Plumes of black smoke were sent billowing into the air at Birds Hill Park Sunday afternoon after a vehicle caught fire.

The blaze began in a sedan at around 5 p.m. in the East Beach parking lot, quickly spreading to three other vehicles.

Manitoba firefighters are on their way to help battle the wildfires ripping through British Columbia.

Manitoba Sustainable Development said Tuesday a team of 13 trained firefighters, along with 50 pumps are on their way to British Columbia, where officials say more than 200 fires were burning across the province as of Monday.
