A 47-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly setting a fire at the St. Vital Walmart that caused more than $10 million in damage.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, the suspect allegedly went to the bedding section of the store at 1255 St. Mary’s Road and set fire to bedding products. The fire quickly spread, filling the store with thick black smoke.

While the fire spread, police say the suspect went to an attached in-store McDonald’s, helped himself to a beverage from the soft drink machine, and sat down at a table. Within moments, 150 to 200 patrons and staff were evacuated from the building. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded and knocked down the fire.

Police identified the suspect as Ronald Marmito Amigo, and officers with the bail compliance unit arrested him Thursday in the 300 block of Furby Street.

A small amount of methamphetamine and a lighter were seized as evidence.

Amigo is charged with multiple offences, including arson, drug possession and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody.
