It was a good week to be New Flyer Industries after the Winnipeg-based bus manufacturer landed two large contracts for bus orders in the United States.

New Flyer signed a five-year contract with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for 550 buses and options for up to an additional 350 buses. Metro will receive the 40-foot 900 Xcelsior heavy-duty model with compressed natural gas. It’s the first time New Flyer has built for the Los Angeles fleet in over 10 years.

Milwaukee County Transit has also ordered 55 Xcelsior XD40 buses with options for an additional 35 buses. MCTS and New Flyer have a longstanding partnership, with transit currently operating on a 100% New Flyer fleet.

All 550 buses to the Metro are expected to be delivered by the latter half of the first quarter of 2015, while Milwaukee County Transit can expect their new fleet by this summer.

Besides Winnipeg, New Flyer operates a manufacturing facility in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Two Winnipeg entrepreneurs will have their product in the hands of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities next weekend.

Deborah Hosaki from Hoshii Designs and Louise Vargas from SoGa Soap & Cupfakery are shipping their signature products off to Universal City, California to be included in the gift bags for celebrities, media and publicists attending the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, June 3.

“It’s a rare opportunity for exposure that I’m not likely to get anywhere else,” Hosaki said, who sells sewn boutique items such as handbags, scarves, and other accessories inspired by her grandmothers’ Japanese artisan talents.

Vargas also runs her business out of her own home in Wolseley. When not working as a surgical neuromonitoring technologist at the Health Sciences Centre, she crafts natural care products for sensitive skin.

“The growth has been far more than anticipated. I can see in my future that opening a dedicated store is inevitable, and that’s really exciting,” Vargas said.

Vargas’ soap and Hosaki’s fashion accessories were handpicked by members of The Artisan Group, which exists to promote handmade artisans at celebrity events such as the MTV Movie Awards. Award nominees include Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Johnny Depp and Rachel McAdams.

Members of Manitoba’s talented music industry are headed south to rub shoulders with industry movers and shakers in Los Angeles.

Four Manitoba artists and entrepreneurs from several Manitoba-based companies will make their way south to do business with some of the industry’s leading players at a market development event at the Canadian Consul General’s Official Residence on May 29.

“Los Angeles is a major market of interest for Manitoba companies and represents the best avenue for accessing the ever-growing area of film, television, trailer, and game placements for music,” said Sara Stasiuk, Manitoba Music’s executive director. “The connections made at events like these are key to helping our talented and accomplished artists and entrepreneurs achieve the next level of success.”

Performers include JUNO award-winning singer/songwriter Ruth Moody, acoustic pop troubadour JP Hoe, up-and-coming pop act James Struthers, and indie upstarts The Treble.

The initiative allows Manitoba artists and companies to develop critical business contacts and expand to new markets. Manitoba Music is coordinated the trip in partnership with Manitoba Film and Music.

Westman Abduction Ends with Arrest in Los Angeles

A 47-year-old woman who allegedly travelled from western Manitoba to the United States with her son is facing child abduction charges.

Blue Hills RCMP were alerted Wednesday to a possible parental child abduction involving a seven-year-old boy from the Brandon area. The father reported his estranged wife had taken the child, along with many personal effects and their passports.

After a brief investigation involving several Canadian and American law enforcement agencies, the 47-year-old mother of the boy was arrested at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Thursday. Officials were acting on the strength of a Canadian warrant when they placed her under arrest.

The father of the boy has since flown to Los Angeles to reunite with his son and prepare to bring him back to Canada.

The woman’s name isn’t being released to protect the child’s identity. She will be extradited back to Canada to face child abduction charges.

1.6 Million Apply for Jackson Memorial Passes

1.6 Million Apply for Jackson Memorial Passes

Staples Center - Michael Jackson

More than 1.6 million fans applied online over the weekend to get a chance to win a pair of passes to Michael Jackson‘s memorial on Tuesday. Only 8,750 names were drawn to attend the event, which will be spread out between the Staples Center and Nokia Theater is Los Angeles. Each name pulled received two tickets.

A quick search of Twitter brought up posts form several Winnipeggers who had also applied, including myself. I thought I was pretty fortunate by being able to log onto the Staples Center website minutes after the address was announced on Friday morning. Unfortunately, I was not one of the lucky ones selected.

There’s no word yet on what the memorial will actually include. Rumours of Jackson’s body being present are simply that — rumours.

But as the LAPD and AEG said last week, the best seat will be in your living room, as the Jackson family has arranged for a free worldwide pool feed of the memorial. Which basically means a designated camera will shoot the action and send out the feed via satellite to any station who wishes to carry the signal and show their viewers.

As plans for the memorial and funeral continue, authorities are investigating allegations that Jackson consumed painkillers, antidepressants and other medications. Several of Jackson’s doctors could also be in hot water if they’re found to have written prescriptions for the singer using aliases.

Air New Zealand Plans Love at First Flight

By Brian Schultz

Dating CouplesForget the mile high club, this flight has a bit more class.

Air New Zealand is planning to send a flight of Americans from Los Angeles to Auckland on October 13 as part of the ‘Match Making Flight For Lonely Hearts’. The specially-themed flight will encourage those aboard to mix and mingle, pairing up based on compatibility tests taken online six months prior.

The round-trip ticket for the 13-hour flight is $780, which includes a pre-launch party at the Los Angeles airport where singles can enjoy food, drink, entertainment and games.

“If your dating profile says you enjoy fine wine and long walks on the beach, then New Zealand is your perfect place for romance,” the airline’s marketing manager, Steve Bayliss, told the New Zealand Herald.

Why do I think the lavatory will be “occupied” for most of the flight?
