Facebook Deals is now available to Canadian users. (FACEBOOK)
Facebook has brought its popular ‘Deals’ feature to Canada, launching the service north of the border Monday, as well as in the U.K. and Europe.
Users can “check in” with their iPhone or Android devices at various locations and see nearby deals and promotions for stores, restaurants and other retail vendors.
It’s a similar approach to what Foursquare already offers, but utilizes the more than 500 million members Facebook has to bolster its position in the deal-grabbing phenomenon.
In a note, Facebook said, “These deals come from merchants, not Facebook, so check in to Places and search your favourite local stores to find out when deals are running, how many are available, and other details — such as whether a deal is just for you or also for your friends.”
Deals will be flagged with a yellow icon letting you know a certain retailer is offering something special for checking in with Facebook’s “Places” feature.
Some of the Canadian deals promoted include 40% off one regular priced book or toy at all Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores, 30% off any one regular priced item at H&M, and free access to a Plaza Premium Lounge at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Local deals are available from a handful of Winnipeg retailers, but you’ll have to use Places to find the nearest money-saving bargain in your area. With the launch of Facebook Deals in Canada, the consumer will be sure to benefit as more businesses jump on board.
